Crushers Lineup Goes Cold as Quebec No-Hits Lake Erie to Even Series

Avon, Ohio – The Lake Erie Crushers’ six-game winning streak came to a close on Saturday night. The Crushers (6-2) were blanked in a combined no-hit effort by the Quebec Capitales (4-4) pitching staff, Quebec winning 4-0.

The loss drops Lake Erie down to 2nd place in the Frontier League West standings with Schaumburg winning on Saturday night.

The opening run for the Capitales came in the top of the first inning as they set the stage for a high-intensity performance at the plate. Leadoff DH Marc-Antoine Lebreux shot a double into right field, putting himself in scoring position to kick things off.

He would then be sent home after 3B Anthony Quirion singled into center field to make it a 1-0 game.

The Capitales would then find two more runs in the second inning through four hits and one walk. The big mark came as LF Tommy Seidl recorded a 2 RBI double into center field off Crushers RHP Matt Mulhearn.

Mulhearn would surrender 4 runs on 9 hits over his 5 innings of work. He would be handed the loss, making him 1-1 on the season through two starts.

With two runners on base and no outs, the stage was set up nicely for the Capitales in the top of the 4th. RF Justin Gideon singled into right field to send C Tyler Blaum home for the team’s fourth run, making it 4-0.

Meanwhile on the mound for Quebec, starer, LHP Ryo Kohigashi, was getting weak contact up and down the Crushers lineup, working 5 hitless innings, walking 6, but keeping Lake Erie at bay.

Capitales RHP Ryan Sandberg was unreal, throwing just 27 pitches through three innings while striking out three batters in relief of Kohigashi.

In the 9th inning, Quebec RHP Austin Marozas set down the Crushers 1-2-3, striking out last night’s hero DH Alfredo Gonzalez to complete the no-hit bid for the Capitales. Kohigashi would get the W in Quebec’s combined no-hit effort.

The Crushers will look to take the series against the Capitales on Sunday, May 19, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. The ballgame will be the final game of a nine game homestand to start the 2024 season. Quebec’s Sam Ryan will go up against Lake Erie’s Anthony Escobar in the rubber match.
