Crushers Drop Series Opener

Sauget, Ill. – For the first time in almost a month, the Crushers dropped two series in a row in their hot stretch. The team looked to get back on track with a pivotal series against the Gateway Grizzlies on Tuesday.

Nothing went right for the Crushers in the series opener. Trailing throughout the game and never gaining any type of momentum for a comeback. The Grizzlies started off the series the right way with a 8-1 win.

No runs were scored until the bottom of the fourth inning. Gateway the first team on the board with five runs in one inning. Abdiel Diaz started the inning off with an RBI single to center field. Jay Prather followed with a two RBI double to left center. Andrew Penner padded the lead in a loud way, a two run home run over the center field wall.

The Grizzlies added two runs in the sixth inning. Diaz oncemore singled to right field, Freeman scored, his second RBI of the game. Ian Bibiloni stole home on a throw to second base that allowed him to score.

Pitching for Gateway crushed any momentum for Lake Erie. The starter Taylor Sugg continued his impressive season with five scoreless innings, zero runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. Colton Easterwood, Alec Whaley, and Anderson DeLeon each followed with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Gateway added on to their lead in the eighth inning. Bibiloni scored on a passed ball, now an eight run lead.

Lake Erie with zero runs, three outs to work any type of magic before the game was over. The Crushers were able to cross one runner across the plate. Recently acquired London Green recorded an RBI sac-fly. That’d be the only offense for Lake Erie, falling to the Grizzlies, 8-1.

The two teams will square off on Wednesday, August 10th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 PM ET.
