AVON, Ohio — The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy Health, lost to the Schaumburg Boomers at Boomers Stadium on Tuesday night, by a score of 6-0 to drop the first game of the three-game road series.
The loss for the Crushers (7-3) is their first loss in the last five games, while the Boomers (6-4) win to get one game closer to first place in the East Division.
Greyfer Eregua (0-1) earned the loss in his third start of the summer today for the Crushers. Eregua went 4.2 innings giving up five runs, four earned, off of 10 hits, while walking one and striking out four. Former Lake Erie Crusher Connor Reed (1-0) won his first game of the summer as he pitched wonderfully. Reed went 5.1 innings, giving up no runs, only three hits, walked four, and struck out six Lake Erie batters. Eregua’s loss marks the first loss recorded by a Lake Erie starting pitcher this season.
The Boomers offense struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning. Schaumburg started that inning with their leadoff man Qunicy Nieporte reaching base via a hit by pitch. Eregua would go on to strike out Nick Oddo but then give up back-to-back singles to Connor Oliver and Rayden Sierra. With the bases loaded, Dylan Jones reached on an error by shortstop Emmanuel Marrero. During that same play, Nieporte scored the first run of the game. Oliver was then hit in courtesy of the sacrifice fly from Alex Polston to make the score 2-0. The Boomers would go on to score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Oliver and Sierra delivered for Schaumburg’s offense as Oliver hit a one-out two RBI single to make the score 4-0. Sierra then hit an RBI single for the third run of the inning. Schaumburg went on to put up one more run in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach for Lake Erie.
The Crushers offense failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities. Lake Erie had at least one base runner on in every inning of offense. In four of those nine innings, the Crushers had their lead-off man reach base safely and left 11 runners on base in the contest. Even though the Crushers offense only had five hits, they also had six batters walked. The opportunities were there but the Crushers could not find a way to plate any runs. The top four batters for Lake Erie combined to go 0-11 with three strikeouts and six walks. The usually very aggressive base running Crushers only had one stolen base recorded today by James Davison Jr. in the top of the ninth inning. The three players for the Crushers to record hits were Zach Racusin, Steven Kraft, and Davison Jr.. Racusin ended the day going 1-4, Kraft finished his day going 2-4, and Davison’s final stat line read 2-3.
The Crushers will continue the three-game series with the Schaumburg Boomers at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg, IL on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Alex Romero will take the mound for the Crushers. The Boomers will counter with right-hander Taylor Goshen. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CST.
