Thomason Plus Doubles Plays are the Magic Mixture in Win Over Florence

Florence, KY – Another series, another series win for the Lake Erie Crushers (22-10). Homers were plentiful in their 7-5 win over the Florence Y’alls (10-20). The win keeps them within .5 games of first place in the Frontier League West standings.

The Crushers matched their run total from Friday in the 1st inning on Saturday, taking advantage of two walks and a HBP from Y’alls starter, Edgar Martinez. 3B Logan Thomason and RF Jack Harris smacked back-to-back RBI singles, then 2B Alex Epp reached on an error, allowing another run to cross the plate. Lake Erie would take a 3-0 lead before LHP Darrien Ragins even threw a pitch.

The Y’alls would load the bases in the bottom of the 1st against Ragins, but the Crushers starter would induce a double play and a flyout to limit the damage to just one Florence run, 3-1.

In the top of the 3rd, Logan Thomason would add another RBI single to his ledger, extending the Crushers lead to 4-1. Thomason’s batting average continues to climb, and he now has a five game hitting streak with 6 RBI in those games.

Florence RF Hank Zeisler launched a solo homer off Ragins in the home half of the 3rd, cutting the Crushers lead in half, 4-2.

Jack Harris saw his right field counterpart go yard and said, “I’ll raise you one.” In the 5th, Harris launched a two-run jack to extend the Crushers lead, 6-2. Harris now has a homer in three straight games. The kids these days might call that, “on fire”.

A 2B Jeremiah Burks homer in the bottom of the 5th led off the inning and got the Y’alls back within three. But, then “XBH Logan Thomason” made that short-lived, launching a solo shot of his own in the 6th to get the run right back. A 7-3 lead for Lake Erie and an incredible day at the plate for the Crushers 3B. His statline: 3-4, 3 RBI, 3 R, 1 HR, BB.

Florence and Lake Erie were intent on trading homers all night long. Y’alls catcher Sergio Gutierrez sent an opposite-field shot off RHP Leonardo Rodriguez in the 7th to once again make it a three run game, 7-4.

Rodriguez would induce a double play later in the inning – the fourth double play Crushers pitchers twirled on the day. This number is staggering in itself, but even more so when you consider the Y’alls had the least amount of GIDP in the Frontier League, coming into the game with just 10. If dog is man’s best friend, double play is pitcher’s best friend.

Trevor Kuncl came in for the save in the 9th, but the Y’alls got going quickly. A leadoff single followed by an RBI double by Sergio Gutierrez made the score 7-5 and brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out.

With men on the corners and one out, C John Tuccillo gunned down Y’alls Alberti Chavez trying to steal second. Talk about a clutch second out with the winning run at the plate. Moments later, Kuncl got a swing and a miss from Ed Johnson for a strikeout to end the ballgame. A little bit of drama in the 9th, but yet another save for Trevor Kuncl. He now has double digit saves (10) in this 2024 season.

Darrien Ragins (3-0) got the win after pitching five innings, giving up three runs. Y’alls Edgar Martinez (1-1) went just two innings in a losing effort.
