Escobar Excellent Again As Crushers Open New Jersey Circuit With Win

Paterson, NJ – The Lake Erie Crushers (32-17) stayed hot to begin their New Jersey circuit road trip on Friday, beating the New Jersey Jackals (13-35) comfortably by a score of 5-1.

The Crushers remain in 1st place in the Frontier League West by .5 games.

Lake Erie would get on the board first in the top of the 3rd. The inning was jump started by a C John Tuccillo leadoff single followed by a double by CF Sam Franco, the new addition to the Crushers roster after signing Friday morning.

SS Jarrod Watkins and 2B Logan Thomason put balls in play for outs, but both Tuccillo and Franco were able to come around to score to give Lake Erie a 2-0 lead.

John Tuccillo would stay hot at the plate in the 5th, launching his second homer of the season to extend the Crushers’ lead to 3-0. Tuccillo’s role as a starting catcher comes now with Alfredo Gonzalez being placed on the inactive list.

All-Star RHP Anthony Escobar got the ball for Lake Erie, and he proved just why he was an All-Star selection on Friday. Escobar tossed six scoreless innings while giving up just three hits. He struck out seven Jackals along the way to his 6th quality start this season.

The Jackals would get their only tally of the game in the 7th – a CF Bryson Parks solo home run off LHP Cal Carver to make it 3-1. The lone homer is the first run scored off the Crushers’ bullpen in over a week. You have to go back to June 27th against the Windy City Thunderbolts to find the most recent run against Lake Erie relievers.

Logan Thomason got back in on the action with his own two-run homer in the 9th to push the Crushers to 5-1 over the Jackals. Thomason’s home run was his 4th of the year, and he would cash in his 3rd RBI of the day with the blast.

Thankfully, the solo home run is all the Jackals would muster. RHP Sammy Tavarez struck out two batters in a perfect 8th inning, then All-Star selection, RHP Trevor Kuncl, would strike out two of his own in a perfect 9th to log the 5-1 victory in New Jersey.

Ronald Washington stayed hot at the plate, going 2-4. Sam Franco also had a solid 2-4 day at the plate with his 3rd inning double in his first game with Lake Erie.

Anthony Escobar (6-0) remains unbeaten in 2024, and the Crushers improve to 8-2 when Escobar starts.
