Eighth Inning Threat Fizzles Out For Lake Erie in Loss

Sauget, IL – The Lake Erie Crushers (23-14) dropped game one of a three game series against a west division rival, Gateway Grizzlies (21-15), by a score of 4-3.

Lake Erie struck first with a baserunning quirk in the top of the 3rd, pulling off a steal of home by CF Burle Dixon with RF Jack Harris in motion for a 1-0 lead.

Gateway found their way to the plate in a similar fashion, taking advantage of a wild pitch by Crushers starter Darrien Ragins in the 4th. The equalizer was the only blemish on Ragins’ line until the 6th.

With two outs, RF Kyle Gaedele ripped an RBI double to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead. Cal Carver would come in relief of Ragins the next batter. Ragins’ final line: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.

C Alfredo Gonzalez saw Gateway’s lead and decided to snatch it right back in the 7th, launching his 8th homer of the season to tie the game at two. Pasta’s homer was his sixth homer in his last ten games – an absolute tear for the veteran.

Gateway would respond in the bottom half, taking advantage of an error by new 2B Alex Epp. 1B Peter Zimmerman drove in CF Cole Brennan with a fielder’s choice. Then, SS Abdiel Diaz drove in Zimmerman with a single to extend the lead, 4-2. Both runs came in unearned.

Lake Erie threatened in the 8th, loading the bases with nobody out. 1B Scout Knotts grounded into a double play, which scored a run, but alleviated the looming threat by the Crushers late in the ballgame. Gateway’s Alec Whaley was able to get out of the inning with the tying run stranded on third base.

In a 4-3 game, Matt Hickey came on for the save for Gateway. Lake Erie put men on 1st and 2nd, but failed to get the big hit in the 9th.

The Grizzlies walk away from game one of a crucial series with a win.

Alec Whaley (1-0) receives the win in his relief effort. Lake Erie’s Cal Carver (1-1) was addressed the loss, giving up two unearned runs.
