Crushers Sign Veteran RHP Pedro Echemendia

Avon, OH – Jared Lemieux announced on Sunday morning the signing of Cuban-born RHP Pedro Echemendia.

A native of Ciego de Avila, Cuba, the 33-year old veteran joins Lake Erie as its second veteran classified player (Alfredo Gonzalez).

Echemendia signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015 after appearing in the Cuban National Series 50 with his hometown Tigers de Ciego de Avila from 2009-2011.

He rose through the Cardinals system quickly, making it to AAA Memphis in just his second season in the Cardinals organization. Much of Echemendia’s time in affiliated ball was shared between AAA Memphis and AA Springfield.

Echemendia’s cumulative minor league stats are very impressive. He sported a 3.50 ERA in 182.2 IP, amassing a 13-6 record with 18 saves.

Los Tiburones de La Guaria in the Venezuelan Winter League was his next stop for the winter of 2017. There, Echemendia shared a clubhouse with Lake Erie pitching coach Jonathan Albaladejo, which gives him the connection to the team. The two also were teammates on the Lancaster Barnstormers (Atlantic League) in 2019.

Skipper Jared Lemieux told broadcaster, Zane Bloom, that he often likes to see players before he signs them, but was willing to make an exception based on the trustful testimony of Jonathan Albaladejo.

Pedro Echemendia joins Michel Triana as the second Cuban-born player to join the team this week. The veteran will be thrust right into the action as he will get the start on Sunday against the Washington Wild Things as Lake Erie looks to sweep the series.
