Crushers Muster Just Three Hits in Loss to Miners

Augusta, NJ – The Lake Erie Crushers (34-19) mustered just 3 hits on Wednesday in a 5-1 loss to the Sussex County Miners (18-34). The Crushers fall to 1.5 games behind Washington in the Frontier League West.

Just like on Tuesday, the Miners scored first with a sacrifice fly. This time it was a 2nd inning pop by LF Sam Linscott to give Sussex County an early 1-0 lead.

RF Jack Harris set the table in the 4th with a leadoff triple, his team-leading 3rd triple of the season. LF Ronald Washington was able to bring in Harris with a slow groundout to knot the game at 1-1. It was Washington’s 30th RBI of the season and his 12th in his last eight games.

In the bottom of the 4th, 3B Tony Gomez got the run back with an RBI single. Then RF Gabriel Maciel put a second tally across with an RBI groundout. CF Alec Sayre put the icing on the cake with another RBI single to put the Miners up 4-1. All three 4th inning runs were unearned on RHP Matt Mulhearn’s line.

Sayre helped the Miners steal another run in the 6th with his second RBI single of the game. Just prior, Tony Gomez stole 2nd on a 1-2 count with two outs. Sayre singled on the very next pitch. That knock gave the Miners a 5-1 lead and knocked Matt Mulhearn out of the game. Mulhearn’s final line: 5.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 1 K on 98 pitches.

The Crushers managed just two hits against Miners’ starter, RHP Tyler Thornton. He would be relieved in the 8th with the score 5-1 Sussex County.

LHPs Kenny Pierson and Cal Carver combined for scoreless outings to finish the game for Lake Erie, but the offense couldn’t respond as necessary. The Crushers dropped the middle game of the series 5-1.
