Crushers Mash Three Homers in Win Over Sussex County

Augusta, NJ – The Lake Erie Crushers (34-18) got back on track on Tuesday with a comfortable 9-3 victory over the Sussex County Miners (17-34). The Crushers remain .5 games behind Washington in the Frontier League West.

Sussex County got on the board early against LHP Darrien Ragins with a sacrifice fly by SS Cory Acton in the 1st. The run went unearned on Ragins’ line.

The Crushers responded nicely in the 2nd. C John Tuccillo got something going with a two-out triple. His three-bagger is his third extra base hit in as many games and extends his hitting streak to 8 games. CF Burle Dixon cashed in on the two-out hit, driving in Tuccillo with a double to knot the game 1-1.

The Miners continued the see-saw effort and got the run right back in the bottom half. After two straight hits to lead off the inning, LF Sam Linscott grounded into a fielder’s choice. DH Gavin Stupienski scored, and Sussex County went back up 2-1. Ragins did a nice job to retire the next two batters and limit the damage to just one run.

In the 5th, SS Jarrod Watkins made Miners’ starter, Jose Ledesma, pay for a leadoff walk. On a 1-1 pitch Watkins turned on a fastball and deposited it over the right field fence for a go-ahead two-run homer.

Then, RF Jack Harris added on a double in the inning to set the table for Vincent Byrd Jr. Byrd gave his best Carlos Gonzalez impression, turning on an inside fastball, dropping the bat, and leaving the yard all in one motion. The ball came off the bat at 109.5 mph and gave the Crushers a 5-2 lead. Byrd’s homer was his 10th of the season; he now leads the Crushers and is T-6th in the Frontier League.

In the 6th, the Crushers loaded the bases with two outs. On an 0-2 pitch, Jack Harris nubbed a ball up the first base line, but Jose Ledesma airmailed the first baseman. All three runners scored on the play, and the Crushers broke the game wide open with an 8-2 lead. The error was the third of the day for Sussex County.

C Jason Agresti tacked on the third run of the game for Sussex County with a sacrifice fly in the 6th. Ragins maneuvered out of bases loaded, one out in the inning to complete his outing. Ragins finished his day with 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R (1 earned),  2 BB, 1 K.

Ragins was relieved by RHP Leonardo Rodriguez, who logged a couple of strikeouts in a scoreless 7th inning. Leo came back out for the 8th and set down the Miners 1-2-3.

LF Ronald Washington had already extended his hitting streak to 7 straight games earlier in the contest, but he decided to put his mark on the game in the 9th. Washington worked a deep count and crushed a payoff pitch way over the wall in left center for his 7th homer of the season.

The Crushers enjoyed a 9-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Garrett Coe came on to get the final 3 outs. He did so in 1-2-3 fashion and kept his ERA at 0.00 in 4 IP for the Crushers this season.

Darrien Ragins (6-0) remains unbeaten on the season. He got his 3rd straight win in as many starts. Jose Ledesma (4-5) was given the loss for Sussex County.
