Byrd’s Early Blast Powers Crushers to Win Against Grizzlies

Sauget, IL – The Lake Erie Crushers (24-15) were able to steal a game against the Gateway Grizzlies (22-16) on Sunday, winning 7-2 in the final game of the three game set.

Looking for a quick jumpstart for the offense, the Crushers broke the ice in grand fashion in the opening frame. 1B Vincent Byrd Jr launched a grand slam before Collin Sullivan recorded an out for Gateway. The 4-0 lead in the 1st was the first time the Crushers offense eclipsed three runs in the series.

Vincent Byrd Jr. would be involved with more scoring in the top of the 3rd, nearly missing an opposite field homer. He settled for a double off the big left field wall at Grizzlies Ballpark. He would score on an RBI single by DH Alex Epp, the second run of the inning, extending the Lake Erie lead 6-0.

RF Jose Torrealba would later add on with an RBI single on a two strike pitch, putting the Crushers up 7-0 in the 5th.

Crushers starter RHP Anthony Escobar played the stopper role with excellence on Sunday, eating 6.2 scoreless innings. Escobar gave up just four hits and two walks, lowering his season ERA under 3 – a masterful performance in an important series finale.

The offense on both sides would be quiet once the bullpens settled in, and the 7-0 score would hold until the bottom of the 9th. Grizzlies LF Kevin Krause hit an opposite field two-run homer off RHP Enrique Ozoa. That would be all for the Gateway offense as Lake Erie walked away with a 7-2 win.

Anthony Escobar (4-0) got the win in an outing that tied his season long (6.2 IP). Gateway’s Collin Sullivan (3-3) fell behind in the first, holding through the conclusion of the game for the loss.

The Crushers sneak back into 2nd place in the Frontier League West standings with the win on Sunday. They trail Washington by 1.5 games.
