Bats Can’t Get Going, Early Hole Too Big For Crushers

Florence, KY – The Lake Erie Crushers (22-11) couldn’t finish the sweep of the Florence Y’alls (11-20) on Father’s Day, dropping the finale 7-0.

This one was all Y’alls from the opening gun.

Florence struck in the 1st inning on Sunday when DH Craig Massey smoked a double to right center field to score a couple. Then, RF TJ Reeves (celebrating his first Father’s Day as a dad) went to the opposite field for a 2-run homer as Florence took an early 4-0 lead on Father’s Day. Dad strength is very, very real. The Y’alls would bring eight men to the plate in the opening frame against RHP Matt Mulhearn.

Mulhearn would settle in with scoreless frames through the 4th inning before surrendering a leadoff walk in the 5th. The walk would come around to score on a TJ Reeves single up the middle to make the score 5-0 Y’alls in the 5th.

In the 6th, LF Stephen Hrustich led off the inning with his first professional home run to extend the lead further. Mulhearn would exit with the bases loaded and just one out in the inning. RHP Enrique Ozoa would walk in a run, but induce a double play to get out of the inning – Y’alls led 7-0.

On the other mound was Randy Abshier making his professional debut against the Lake Erie lineup, and he was stellar. Abshier went 6 IP giving up just three hits, no walks, and struck out six batters on 70 pitches (55 strikes). An incredible first impression for the Florence starter.

Abshier would get the win as the Florence bullpen maintained the shutout against the Lake Erie lineup, 7-0. It’s just the second time this season the Crushers have been shutout, the last time being the no-hitter by the Quebec Capitales back on May 18th.

In a bit of silver lining, 3B Logan Thomason stayed hot, going 2-4 with *another* extra base hit with his 10th double of the season in the 9th.

Despite the loss, the Crushers will maintain at least 2nd place in the Frontier League West and still come back home with a successful 4-2 road trip.
