Alfredo Gonzalez Wins Frontier League Player of the Week

Avon, OH – The Frontier League announced on Monday that Lake Erie C Alfredo Gonzalez received Frontier League Player of the Week honors for the week of June 24.

Gonzalez went 12-27 (.444) with a 2B, HR, 9 RBI, 5 R, and went 3-3 in SB attempts in 6 games played. Behind the dish, Gonzalez also caught two baserunners trying to steal.

Perhaps the most impressive mark of the week was his five game multi-hit streak spanning from June 25 to June 29. A hitting streak is something to marvel at, but to have five straight games of two or more hits is an even more incredible feat. In those five games, Gonzalez also had an RBI streak in conjunction with his multi-hit streak.

Alfredo Gonzalez is the first Lake Erie position player to win Frontier League Player of the Week honors, but he joins LHP Jack Eisenbarger in similar honors after he won Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 2.

As of Monday, July 1, Gonzalez is slashing .293/.360/.526 in 36 games played this season. His nine home runs put him tied for sixth in the Frontier League, and his .526 SLG is tenth in the league.

The 31-year old catcher was signed this offseason, and his veteran experience has been crucial to Lake Erie’s success in the first half of 2024. Crushers Skipper, Jared Lemieux, continues to speak very highly of Gonzalez:

“Alfredo has done a fantastic job so far in his leadership role with the club. It’s nice to see him get recognition for his hard work. He was fun to watch this week for sure.”

Whether it’s at the plate or behind the plate, you can count on Alfredo Gonzalez to be a leader. It is no coincidence that Lake Erie’s pitching staff is  top-3 in the Frontier League in almost every major statistical category.

Catchers can sometimes be forgotten, wearing the mask and seemingly hiding behind home plate, but a keen eye would tell any true baseball fan that the impact a good catcher has on a baseball team is much more than just catching pitches.

You can always catch Alfredo Gonzalez wearing a bright smile, joking around with the other team (and sometimes even umpires), impersonating Jack Sparrow while running the bases, and taking a nice slow jog around the pillows after hitting a long home run.

If you want to see Alfredo Gonzalez in person, you can get your tickets at lakeeriecrushers.com. The Crushers will take on the Windy City Thunderbolts starting July 2nd at 7:05pm EST. It’s PAW-ty in the USA, so bring your dog to the ballpark and enjoy $2 LaBatt Beers and $3 pretzels. The first 50 dogs will also receive a free poop bag dispenser, so make sure you bring your puppers early!

On Wednesday, July 3rd, it’s the BIGGEST fireworks show of the year with Red, White, and BOOM fireworks brought to you by the city of Avon! You won’t want to miss out on the largest fireworks display in Lorain county this year!

And then, on July 4th, the Crushers will be celebrating America’s Pastime with Baseball Classic fireworks! There’s nothing like baseball, fireworks, and a nice cold beer on the Fourth of July, and speaking of beer, it just happens to be a Thirsty Thursday! Enjoy half off all Great Lake Brewing products all game long and cheer on your Crushers as they look to sit atop the Frontier League West!
