Crushers Leak Runs in Middle Innings, Drop Middle Game in Windy City

Crestwood, IL – The Windy City Thunderbolts (17-25) reversed the script on the Lake Erie Crushers (25-16), getting down early but coming from behind to win 7-3 in a morning matchup on Wednesday.

The Crushers remain 1.5 games behind Washington for 1st in the Frontier League despite the loss.

LF Ronald Washington struck first for Lake Erie in the 2nd, ripping an RBI single to score RF Jack Harris and give the Crushers an early lead. C Alfredo Gonzalez would add on later in the inning with a two-run single of his own to give the Crushers a 3-0 lead.

Pasta continues to crush Windy City pitching this season, finishing Wednesday’s game 8-19 (.421) with 8 RBI and 2 HR in four games against the Thunderbolts.

The pitching matchup on Wednesday is one that happened back on May 22nd. Windy City’s Michael Barker was victorious over Jack Eisenbarger in an 8-5 Thunderbolts win. Eisenbarger looked to turn the tides and flip the script.

Through four scoreless innings Eisenbarger K’d up seven Thunderbolts hitters. The Crushers lefty sat in 3rd place in the Frontier League in strikeouts (54) coming into Wednesday’s game, trailing Schaumburg’s Cole Cook by six.

In the bottom of the 5th, Windy City would find a run off Eisenbarger with a two-out RBI single by C Tyler Sandoval. However, 3B Garrett Broussard got overzealous trying to go first to third. He’d be gunned down by CF Ethan Skender (yes, that Ethan Skender) to end the inning with the Crushers still leading 3-1.

Skender’s outfield assist came in his first outfield appearance since 2022 with the San Antonio Missions – San Diego’s AA affiliate. Skender’s seed from center field is the first outfield assist in his professional career.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Thunderbolts would break through against Eisenbarger. LF Thomas Rodriguez barreled up a breaking ball and cleared the left field fence for a two-run homer, tying the game 3-3.

Despite the runs bled at the end of his outing, Eisenbarger completed yet another quality start, his fourth straight since tossing his no-hitter on June 8th. His final line: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 11 K on 106 pitches. Eisenbarger’s 11 strikeouts are a season high.

LHP Kenny Pierson would relieve Eisenbarger in the bottom of the 7th. The Thunderbolts then struck for three doubles in the inning, the last being tucked just inside the 1st base bag by RF Joe Johnson. Another run was tacked on by SS Henry Kuziak, giving the Thunderbolts a 7-3 lead.

The four run 7th off Kenny Pierson would hold as the Crushers offense went quietly in the late innings. Pierson (0-2) would be addressed the loss. Windy City’s Caleb Riedel (1-0) would get the win in his first professional appearance. Riedel tossed two scoreless innings of relief, striking out four batters to stabilize things for the Thunderbolts.
